Chief’s Thoughts (click here for link)
Dear Friends and Neighbors, As I sit writing my thoughts we find ourselves in the most severe economic decline that the great majority of us have ever known. As this crisis impacts all of us as citizens, it also impacts us at the Summit Fire Department (SFD). We are asking ourselves how we best respond to this. We currently have a Budget Advisory Sub-Committee that is working on next year’s budget as well as some strategic planning for the future. The committee will produce some options that will be presented to the fire board for their evaluation and final decision. In Arizona, if you don’t live in a municipality, it is the citizens who have to provide fire and EMS response for themselves through the formation of fire districts with elected boards. We have done that in our community. We believe that our services and fire department should be driven by what the community wants. We have built community rooms onto each of our stations and they are used almost daily. We have provided a Fuels Management Program that allows homeowners to have fuels reduced on their property for more than a reasonable rate. We provide Public Education and provide for “All Risk” response. Our main mission, however, is to provide immediate, professional fire and EMS response. This costs a lot of money to do and will never be cheap but is this what the community wants? Does the community support us to provide Advance Life Support, Public Education, Fuels Reduction and a staffing level of a minimum of two and maximum of three firefighters per engine? Are the efforts of the SFD important to the health and well being of our community? These are but a few of the questions we are trying to sort out in order to determine what kind of service delivery we should provide. We have canceled or postponed many projects that we had scheduled for this year. We are writing many grants to acquire as much funding support from outside the district as possible. Each of our firefighters is assigned to a “program” so that we reduce the amount of “out-sourcing “ we use to reduce operating costs. We have established a hiring freeze and are discussing furloughs and a salary freeze to try and keep our staffing level where it is today. We are doing all of this to try and keep the service delivery we’ve worked for years to provide from slipping away. Those of you who have used our services understand what an emergency can be and how you can be impacted by it. Incidents happen every day and we want to make sure we are providing the best service available to those of you who pay our way. We would like to hear from you concerning what level of service you think we should provide. You can call us, send us a letter or send an e-mail to sfdadm@infomagic.net and we will respond to you. As we enter another fire season with below normal precipitation, we ask for all of you to be safe with fire. We at the SFD hope that you and yours have a great Spring and Summer and we hope to see you at our Open House in May.

New White Engine You may see a new (used) white fire engine in the area. Summit Fire District bought this from the City of Mesa for $8,000. Our purpose for this purchase is to extend the need to purchase a new engine by several years. Our last brand new engine cost us $428,000 so we believe this used, but well maintained engine will serve us well and take some of the pressure off of our 4 wheel drive engines we need in the winter. Please feel free to stop by anytime and look at this engine or any of our other stations and apparatus.
Burn Permits You are required to have a burn permit before burning any weeds or branches. The burn permits are FREE and have no expiration for as long as you own the property.
