As the seasons change so will our community’s fire and medical
emergencies. Your fire dept. will respond to significantly more
structure fires and car accidents through the winter than any other
season, as the clogged chimney’s heat up and the roads get icy,
Summit Fire will be very busy.
Summit firefighters are currently concentrating on structure fire
training and patient extrication from car accidents. Recently your
firefighters participated in “live fire” drills at the city’s
burn tower located at fire station #3. The highlight of the training
was practicing with the new Thermal
Imaging Camera; this camera allows firefighters to see trapped
victims and spot hidden fire. Training with the TIC in live fire
conditions prepares us to be our best when it counts the most. Our
firefighters also were involved in “multi-agency” training in the
city. The training involved Flagstaff FD, Highlands FD, and the 911
dispatch center. The training involved a warehouse that was on fire
(simulated) and the ability of all three departments working together
to mitigate a very dangerous event, the training was a success with a
lot learned by all three fire depts. Firefighters are also involved in
monthly training focusing on patient management during an emergency
medical call including car accidents. In November the firefighters
went to Flagstaff Auto Recyclers on Leupp rd. to continue their EMS
training in extrication. Auto Recyclers allows us to come out to their
yard and practice both advanced hydraulic extrication (the Jaws of
Life) and hand tool use on cars and trucks donated by Auto Recyclers.
Our goal is to train and be prepared for the day when you call your
Summit Fire Dept. for help.
Thanks to the Flagstaff Fire Dept. and Flagstaff Auto Recyclers for their
assistance in our training goals.
