Volunteer
Volunteering
Volunteers with Summit Fire fill several critical roles in
the fulfillment of the mission of the Department.
Each role involves the volunteer in operations, training and
professional development alongside career
personnel. Summit Fire
is committed to an active Volunteer Program and supports this
commitment with an excellent package of benefits.
Roles
Summit Volunteers may find that their role is
in training for certification as a Firefighter/EMT and as such
obtaining a paid part-time position with the Department.
Some volunteers are also considering a career in the fire
service and desire the training and experience that they obtain as a
volunteer. Other
individuals enjoy working in any capacity that supports the mission
of their local fire department and have no interest in either paid
work or in pursuing a fire service career.
Whatever the particular circumstance, participation as a
Summit Volunteer is rewarding and may lead to many new and exciting
experiences.
How
To become a Summit Volunteer you must be at
least eighteen years of age, possess a valid Arizona driver’s
license and live within the boundaries of Summit Fire District.
Most importantly you must have the ability and willingness to
volunteer a minimum of 20 hours of your time to the Department every
month.
Responsibilities
The Summit Volunteer program relies on regular
training and continued participation in the activities of the
Department. A Volunteer
is expected to attend at least one scheduled training every calendar
month and to participate in such other activities during each month
that at total of 20 hours of volunteer time are accumulated.
Benefits
Active Volunteers receive a variety of
benefits. A cash
stipend of $500 is provided every six months.
The department provides communication equipment (VHF radio
and pocket-pager), full personal protective equipment for both
structural firefighting and wildland firefighting, and a generous
uniform allowance. In
addition, Summit Volunteers participate in a Fire District supported
retirement/pension program and the department will provide full
tuition, book and fee support for appropriate community college
courses and other types of training (AZ State Fire School; State
Fire Marshal classes; wildland fire training; and the like).
